We are currently working hard to expand our tax practice. On 1 January, Paulus Merks joined the team as a new partner alongside Sylvia Dikmans and Rob Havenga. We expect to have doubled the size of the tax practice to 30 tax consultants by the end of 2018, so that the practice group can offer all disciplines with tax relevance in-house, such as corporation tax, VAT, income/payroll tax, transfer tax and transfer pricing, including international advice.
“This expansion further strengthens the position of our tax practice in the market and enables us to offer our clients all specialisms of tax law even better” – Edward de Bock

Houthoff has been the principal sponsor of the Dutch National Opera & Ballet since 1 January 2018. Houthoff is the first principal sponsor of this trio of organisations: the National Opera & Ballet theatre and the companies of the National Opera and the National Ballet.
“We are delighted that Houthoff is supporting us in our work to continue to deliver top quality with the National Opera and the National Ballet on the stage, but also behind the scenes in the theatre. Together with Houthoff, we share the passion for our work and the desire to offer top quality and stimulate innovation.” – Els van der Plas, General Director of the Dutch National Opera & Ballet.
During a real election campaign, various good causes compete with each other to win cash prizes given by Houthoff. Thanks to the efforts of Dennis Nederlof (internal department), Sportclub Only Friends was the big winner. Joska Tempel also made a powerful case for a good cause and won a great cash prize for the Christelijk Jongeren Verbond Overschie. Oscar van Angeren, Jessica den Dekker and Yorick Kool got well and truly drenched for Stichting ALS at the London City Swim and also collected a nice starting amount for the 2018 edition.
This year the IBA Annual Conference will be held in Rome. As always, the Houthoff delegation will be in the Houthoff House, ready to welcome clients and business colleagues during meetings, lunches and dinners.
The Legal Design Team at Houthoff, which was formed in 2016, is one of the most innovative in the Dutch legal world. The team has contributed to several prominent cases. We have also seen court judgments where the visual metaphors that we provided gave guidance. Our Legal Design Adviser Sarah van Hecke gave a keynote speech during the Legal Design Summit in Helsinki and held workshops for the legal teams of various clients on subjects such as contract design and stakeholder design.
Want to know more about how to use Legal Design effectively in your organisation? Or want to learn how you as a lawyer can harness the benefits of Legal Design? Then please contact Sarah van Hecke, Legal Design Adviser at Houthoff.
Each year, in collaboration with the Dutch Association of Company Lawyers, Houthoff organises the Bedrijfsjuristen Monitor. This event is the perfect opportunity to discuss topical subjects and relevant issues. All the different ideas and opinions are brought together in a handy reference work, and at drinks afterwards you have the chance to chat with your professional colleagues. If you are a company lawyer and would like to be invited to this event, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
